M16 Family by avitar270 M16 Family by avitar270
M16 (more formally Rifle, Caliber 5.56 mm, M16) is the U.S. military designation for a family of rifles derived from the ArmaLite AR-15 and further developed by Colt starting in the mid-20th century.

The M16 is a lightweight, 5.56 mm caliber, air-cooled, gas-operated, magazine-fed assault rifle, with a rotating bolt, actuated by direct impingement gas operation. The rifle is made of steel, aluminum, and composite plastics.

The M16 rifle family including the M16/A1/A2/A3/A4 has been the primary infantry rifle of the United States military since the 1960s. With its variants, it has been in use by 15 NATO countries, and is the most produced firearm in its caliber. The M16 entered Army service in 1964.
M16A1, M16A2, M4, M16A4, from top to bottom.

I think the one on the bottom is an M16 A3 because it has the fixed front sight assembly. The A4 series has a gas block without a fixed sight.

Really? Because last time I checked, the AR-15 is select fire: 3-round burst or single shot.

The A1 had a Full Auto option. The A2 has only single shot (semi auto) and 3 round burst. I can't say for the M4 or A3. The reason for removing the full auto option was simple. Waste of bullets. Most bullets after the third were unlikely to hit anything at all.

Very pretty, precision weapons that have become a symbol of freedom. Only drawback is the mechanism.

Contrary to popular thought, the 80 percent of the problems caused are magazine related problems. I have never seen an AR that has experienced a failure due to "fouling from the direct impingement gas system". Get good magazines, and your M4 or M16 will be just as reliable as a Kalashnikov.

Um... actually, that's not an M16A3, it's an M4. The A3 series have an SAF trigger group, a flat-top reciever, and can mount an M4 style RIS.

The awe of love pulled out of the roots
Just rolling thunder we found
Pregnant with the tears of shame
But never let'em out

We shoot'em down
We shoot'em down
We shoot'em down

Free fire zone with my m-16
Vendetta burns inside
Wiped out their lives for eyes unseen
Mercy chilled to the freezing point
To the war

Blind religion, clouded minds
Called by the name of war
223 body penetration
Before you hit the ground

We shoot'em down
We shoot'em down
We shoot'em down

Free fire zone with my m-16
Vendetta burns inside
Wiped out their lives for eyes unseen
Mercy chilled to the freezing point
Free fire zone with my m-16
Vendetta burns inside
Wiped out their lives for eyes unseen
Mercy chilled to the freezing point
To the war
You are imploring to my aid
Machine gun fire scorn
Life corroded from inside
Remains in silent force

We shoot'em down
We shoot'em down
We shoot'em down

Free fire zone with my m-16
Vendetta burns inside
Wiped out their lives for eyes unseen
Mercy chilled to the freezing point

AK-47 is more durable, but I really like the design of the M16 better. Besides, I'll take accuracy and proper care over wild burst-fire and no repairs any day.

The AR-15 family is an amazing family of rifles. Ive carried the A2 and A4 since my service in the Marine Corps. Ive fired both the A1 and A3. The A1/A3 is Semi auto and full auto while the A2/A4 is Semi and Three burst. Depending on what your job is you might want to go with a three burst or full auto option. Personally I prefer 3 burst. One round to crack the plate, one to break the plate and one to kill your target.

Wasn't the M16 Fully automatic, M16a1 Fully automatic, M16a2 and up three round burst, with the exception of the M4 Carbines? I know the first is not three round bursts.
